How to Inspect Semi Trailer Chassis and Welding at a Factory
A buyer-focused checklist for reviewing trailer chassis geometry, weld quality and traceable inspection records.

The chassis carries the trailer load, but a quick visual walkaround cannot verify every design assumption. Use a factory inspection to connect the approved drawing, fabricated structure and quality records. This is an educational checklist, not a claim that a particular customer inspected ZONHAN production.
Start with the approved drawing
Confirm the overall length, wheelbase, kingpin location, main beam layout, cross members and axle positions against the latest signed drawing. Ask how deviations are recorded. If the trailer is intended for concentrated machinery loads, discuss where the load enters the deck and how the structure is designed for that loading pattern.
Review welds systematically
Inspect accessible high-stress joints for continuity, obvious cracks, undercut, porosity and incomplete finishing. Ask which welds are subject to documented checks and whether additional non-destructive testing is specified for the order. A cosmetic paint finish should not substitute for inspection of the underlying weld and joint design.
Close with assembly and evidence
Check that axles, suspension, landing gear, brake lines and electrical routing match the specified component list. Request dated inspection records and clear photos of agreed checkpoints before shipment. The precise acceptance standard must come from the contract, drawings and applicable market rules rather than from a generic online checklist.
Separate design verification from visual inspection
A straight-looking beam is not proof that the chassis is designed for the proposed load. Start with the signed drawing, stated material and the load cases used for design. Ask where the highest bending and torsion demands occur for the intended cargo, and whether reinforced areas or additional cross members are specified. For a machinery trailer, concentrated track loads differ from evenly distributed general freight. Compare the physical chassis with that application-specific drawing, not with a generic trailer parked nearby.
Check dimensions at repeatable reference points
Use the same reference points shown on the drawing for kingpin position, axle spacing, deck width and frame straightness. Record the measurement method and tolerances agreed for the order. A difference may be acceptable or may affect tractor clearance, tire loading and cargo position; the supplier should explain it against the approved tolerance rather than dismissing it from a photograph. Check that brackets, outriggers, support points and landing gear are installed where the design expects them.
Discuss the welding process and records
Ask who qualifies weld procedures, how operators are trained and which joints receive documented inspection. Visually review accessible welds before paint where possible, paying attention to starts and stops, fit-up, visible discontinuities and repairs. Request a clear disposition for any defect and a follow-up photo after repair. If a critical joint requires a test beyond visual inspection, put the method and acceptance criteria in the purchase specification; do not assume every weld receives the same inspection.
Follow the load path into running gear
The chassis connects to axles, suspension and the fifth-wheel coupling. Check that mounting points, bolts, brake routing and electrical wiring align with the specified component list and allow future service. Confirm the identity or rating documents for purchased assemblies where promised. Finish with a written list of accepted items, open points and who will verify them before coating or shipment. This provides a clearer audit trail than a set of unlabeled factory photos.

Frequently asked questions
Can a factory photo prove trailer load capacity?
No. Load capacity depends on the approved design, components, test or calculation basis and legal operating limits. Ask for the written specification and supporting records.
Does a painted trailer still allow a welding inspection?
Some visible joints can be reviewed, but coating conceals many details. Arrange a documented pre-paint checkpoint if structural inspection is important to the order.
